Awarding of “St. Vartan” & “Kayl Vahan” Scouting Medals at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello

On March 24, 2019, the fourth Sunday of Great Lent, Sunday of the Steward, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello. During the service, the Prelate awarded “St. Vartan” and “Kayl Vahan” medals to Homenetmen scouts who participated in the religious curriculum. Very Rev. Fr. Muron Aznikian celebrated Divine Liturgy, while Archpriest Fr. Vazken Atmajian and Rev. Fr. Ashod Kambourian assisted in the presentation of the medals. Sunday School students and their parents were among the faithful in attendance.

The Prelate blessed the medals and pinned them on the scouts, after which he delivered his sermon. His Eminence joyfully welcomed the presence of Homenetmen representatives and the young scouts, blessed and commended Homenetmen members for this initiative in collaboration with the Prelacy and other valuable initiatives for the benefit of our youth, and the scouts who earned the medal bearing the names of two of our revered national heroes, stating, “May their faith, courage, and devotion to our church and nation be an inspiration and example for you to follow and guide you to grow into exemplary Christians and Armenians.

Expounded on the day’s Gospel reading from Luke 16, which recounts the parable of the Unjust Steward, the Prelate stated that all that we have is a gift from God and belongs to God and we are to be His just stewards and use the resources He has blessed us with, our talents, abilities, and wealth, to further His goals, for His glory and for the benefit of our fellow man. We are not to be like the “sons of this world,” as in unbelievers who live only for the present physical world, rather like the “sons of light,” believers who prepare themselves for the coming everlasting life. In addition, we are to be faithful with what we have here on earth, wealth, resources, and so on, so that God can trust us to be faithful with the “true riches” we are to receive in His kingdom. “Today is a wonderful opportunity to examine and ask ourselves if we are being faithful and just stewards or if there is room for improvement. Life is fleeting and we may be called to stand before the Lord at any time and give account of our stewardship. Thus, let us be mindful of and grateful for all the blessings in our lives and utilize our gifts for the glory of God and for the advancement of our church and nation, striving only for eternal heavenly treasures,” concluded the Prelate.
