Mid-Lent Celebration at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello

On Wednesday, March 7, 2018, on the occasion of mid-Lent and according to long-standing tradition, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over Sunrise Service at Holy Cross Cathedral, delivered his message, and later presided over the mid-Lent luncheon at “Bagramian” Hall. Very Rev. Fr. Muron Aznikian, parish dean, Rev. Fr. Ashod Kambourian, parish pastor, and Rev. Fr. Khoren Babochian participated in the service. Mesrobian School high school students attended, accompanied by Principal Mr. David Ghoogasian.

In his message, the Prelate spoke on the importance of mid-Lent as an opportunity and invitation to reflect on our Lenten journey to see if we have been faithful in our fasting and spiritual life. “Great Lent is not merely about abstaining from certain foods; it is a time of renewal and cleansing of our minds and spirits,” said His Eminence, and citing from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians and the Gospel of Matthew invited the faithful to pray without ceasing, remain in constant communication with God, balance our physical and spiritual selves through fasting, demonstrate the virtues of mercy, kindness, humility, and patience, in a sense to put away the old and put on the new man. The Prelate also explained the sacrament of penance, stressing that Great Lent is the greatest opportunity for self-examination, self-correction, and renewal. He concluded by wishing that the second half of Great Lent be fruitful and lead to all welcoming the Resurrection Lord with good spirits, pure hearts, and added faith.

The annual traditional Michink luncheon organized by the parish Ladies’ Aid followed. The Prelate delivered the invocation, and Ladies’ Aid Chair Ms. Amalya Nranian welcomed the guests. Mesrobian School students presented a festive cultural program of songs, dance, and recitations.

In his closing message the Prelate commended the organizers and program participants, and speaking on the message of Lent and mid-Lent wished that that the next few weeks be a time of spiritual preparation for the Easter celebration.
