Renowned Composer Dikran Mansourian Honored at the Prelacy

On the evening of Thursday, March 19, 2015, a special event honoring Dikran Mansourian, leading Armenian composer of classical music and film scores, was held at the Western Prelacy “Dikran and Zarouhie Der Ghazarian” under the auspices of H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and organized by the Prelacy Cultural-Educational Committee.

The program began with a viewing of a brief biopic, after which Executive Council Vice-Chair Dr. Dikran Babikian, who served as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, welcomed the guests and expressed contentment at the opportunity to pay tribute to Mr. Mansourian for his lifetime of contributions to music and the arts.

Artist Takouhi Arzoumanian presented the life and works of the honoree, exalting him as a treasure who has enriched the musical legacy of Armenia and Armenians. The program incorporated screenings of excerpts from various film scores composed by Mr. Mansurian, for which Ms. Arzoumanian gave brief explanations. Guests also viewed a performance of “Requiem”, an original composition and arrangement by Dikran Mansurian dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Centennial which premiered in Germany performed by the Berlin Chamber choir and Munich Symphony Orchestra.

LARK Musical Society Director and Composer Vatsche Barsoumian shared memories from his years-long friendship with the honoree, whom he credited for awakening his love of music decades ago. He spoke of Mr. Mansurian as not only a musician but as a poet who possesses the skill and ability to adapt even the most difficult Yeghishe Charents poem into a beautiful composition.

The Prelate commended and thanked the organizers, program participants, guests, and most especially Mr. Mansurian. Cited the Scripture passage “And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people” (Acts 6:8), His Eminence described the honoree as a man of great talent, full of grace and humility, a man with a strong spirit who serves God and his people through his beautiful music. The Prelate announced that in response to a request by him and the Executive Council, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, was bestowing upon Mr. Mansurian the “St. Mesrob Mashdot” medal. His Eminence read the Pontifical Encyclical, and presented the medal to the distinguished composer.

Moved by the gesture, Mr. Mansurian expressed his gratitude to His Holiness for the great honor and his appreciation and thanks to the Prelate, organizers, and participants.

The program came to a close with the benediction, after which guests enjoyed a reception and had the opportunity to personally congratulate the honoree.
