Prelate of Aleppo Visits Chamlian School


On Thursday, October 16, 2014, H.E. Eminence Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and H.E. Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian, Prelate of Aleppo, accompanied by Executive Council Vice-Chair Dr. Dikran Babikian, visited Vahan and Anoush Chamlian School.

Upon their arrival, School Board members, Administration members, teachers and students gathered at the entrance of the school to warmly welcome the Prelates. They toured the school with School Principal, Dr. Talin Kargodorian and Vice Principal, Mrs. Rita Kaprielian. The tour concluded in the school auditorium where the students performed patriotic songs and recitations as a demonstration of support to their fellow students in Syria.

Western Armenian teacher Ms. Ani Berberian welcomed the Prelates and guests. During her speech she stated that Chamlian has undertaken many fundraising efforts to assist Armenian schools and students in Syria. She then welcomed Ara Yacoubian, Student Council President, to speak on behalf of the student body, sharing their regards to the Syrian Armenian students who are experiencing such hardships. He expressed strong solidarity to the students and ensured the Prelate that the students will do everything on their behalf to make the difference.

The Principal’s message was one of hope and encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Syria.

She stated that, “We at Chamlian feel that it is impossible to stay on the sidelines and not lend a helping hand. It is our honor to unite for the Syrian Armenians.”

Archbishop Sarkissian greeted and highly commended Chamlian Armenian School, stating that our schools have a vital role in the grand task of upholding our national values. The Prelate reported on the difficult conditions facing Aleppo’s Armenian Schools. He reminded the students to be thankful for all that they have and urged them to set aside some resources to assist their brothers and sisters experiencing hard times in Syria.

In his message to the students, Archbishop Mardirossian emphasized that he enjoyed the program and felt very proud of the students’ conduct and performance each time he visits Chamlian. He mentioned the importance of this unprecedented visit, as he was accompanied by Archbishop Sarkissian. He spoke of how Aleppo’s students attend Armenian schools in very difficult conditions. He concluded by having the students repeat with him…“Menk enk Souryahye ashagerdnereh”, translated as “We are all the students of Syria”. At the conclusion of his message, the Prelate presented a memento to the school.

The assembly concluded with a joint prayer by the Prelates. After the prayers, the attendees joined the Prelates in singing Cilicia and the Armenian National Anthem. The Prelate of Aleppo was presented with a memento on behalf of the school.
