Armenian Independence Day Reception


On the evening of Thursday, September 15, 2016, a reception hosted by the Consulate General of Armenia in Los Angeles in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Armenia’s independence was held at the Consular office in Glendale. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, attended, accompanied by Rev. Fr. Gomidas Torossian and Rev. Fr. Ardak Demirjian.

The event featured the opening of an art exhibition by international artist Elizabeth Shahenian, a presentation and book-signing by prominent Armenian-American writer and photographer Matthew Karanian, speeches, poetry reading, and musical performances.

The evening began with the Armenian national anthem performed by the “Arevik” Junior Ensemble from Armenia.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Consul Armella Shakaryan, who spoke on the unity and resilience of the Armenian people. Later in the program, Consul Shakaryan presented certificates of recognition and the Arshile Gorky medal from the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Diaspora to artist Elizabeth Shahenian and writer Matthew Karanian for “spreading awareness, gaining recognition of Armenian art abroad, and contributing to the collaboration between Armenia and Diaspora.”

On behalf of the office of Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon, Baydsar Thomassian presented the Consulate with a replica of the “Little Armenia” street sign. Mayor of Glendale, Paula Devine, congratulated the community and shared memories from her trip to Armenia.
