Divine Liturgy on the Feast of Sts. Vartanants

On Thursday, February 20, 2020, clergy and faithful gathered at St. Sarkis Church in Pasadena to commemorate the feast of St. Vartanants.

H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over Divine Liturgy, which was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Ardak Demirijan who also delivered the sermon.

Prior to the sermon, the Prelate presided over the special service dedicated to the feast, which included the hymn “Norahrash” and “Christ our Lord” intercessory prayer.

In his sermon, Fr. Ardak first gave an overview of the Battle of Avarayar. He stated that Vartanants is a celebration of our perseverance and the perpetuation of our faith, language, and culture, and is an occasion to renew our allegiance to our faith and heritage. He noted also that Vartanants is celebrated a few days prior to the start of Great Lent to inspire and strengthen us spiritually for the Lenten journey.

At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy, faithful joined the clergy in the singing of beloved nationalistic songs dedicated to the feast.

The celebration concluded with the Pontifical anthem, “Cilicia,” and the Armenian national anthem.

A reception followed at “Andonian” Hall. Very Rev. Fr. Muron Aznikian spoke on behalf of the clergy stating that Vartanants is a day for renewal of faith and oath. The Prelate commended the Pastor, Board of Trustees, and Ladies Guild of St. Sarkis Church who, in the past few weeks, have graciously hosted various events and receptions. He wished for all to arm themselves with the faith of our Vartanants heroes and begin the Lenten journey to spiritual perfection warmed by Christ’s love.
