Maundy Thursday Commemoration

On April 18, 2019, Maundy Thursday, a number of poignant services were conducted in Prelacy Churches commemorating the last days of the earthly life of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the morning, Divine Liturgy was celebrated and faithful were offered Holy Communion for the first time since the start of Great Lent, commemorating the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus at the Last Supper.

WASHING OF FEET SERVICE

In the afternoon, the Washing of the Feet was conducted following the example of Jesus Who, in a supreme expression of humility, washed the feet of His disciples. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, conducted the service and delivered the message of the day at St. Sarkis Church in Pasadena.

VIGIL SERVICE

In the evening, the heartrending vigil service was conducted commemorating the betrayal, arrest, and suffering of our Lord. The Prelate presided over the service and delivered his message at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello. The service was comprised of Gospel readings and hymns detailing the last hours of our Lord’s earthly life. Candles representing Christ, the eleven apostles, and one black candle representing Judas were extinguished with each Gospel reading, with one candle remaining lit in the end representing Christ’s inextinguishable light.
