Maundy Thursday Commemorations

Maundy Thursday is a day filled with several services observing various events near the end of the earthly ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the morning, Divine Liturgy is celebrated commemorating the sacrament of Holy Communion instituted by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.

In the afternoon of Thursday, April 5, 2012, the Washing of the Feet service took place in Prelacy churches. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, conducted the service at Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello. In his sermon, the Prelate reminded the faithful that by washing the feet of His disciples, Jesus commanded them to follow in His example of love and humility, “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15). And by washing the feet of these children, said the Prelate, we are teaching them love, humility, and service. It is the responsibility of parents to instill these values in our children and youth, he concluded.

In the evening, the solemn vigil service took place commemorating the betrayal and torture of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Prelate led services at Forty Martyrs Church in Orange County. The Prelate solemnly reflected on the immeasurable love of our Lord towards us, for He endured unspeakable suffering and sacrificed His life to grant us eternal life, for which we must give thanks and praise and live God-pleasing lives in accordance with His commandments. In the betrayal of Judas, we see the loving-kindness of Jesus and the ungratefulness of man. In conclusion, the Prelate urged the faithful to live their lives renewed by the live-giving message of the Resurrection and with constant gratitude for our Lord.
