Prayers for the Republic in Prelacy Churches


In celebration of the 98th anniversary of the first Republic of Armenia, on Sunday, May 29, 2016, Thanksgiving Prayers for the Republic was conducted in Prelacy Churches. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over Divine Liturgy and conducted Prayers for the Republic at St. Mary’s Church in Glendale. H.E. Archbishop Sebouh Sarkissian, Prelate, celebrated Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon. H.E. Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian participated in the service. Among the faithful in attendance were Central Executive member Mr. Khajag Dikijian and former Executive Council Vice-Chair Dr. Dikran Babikian.

During the service, on behalf of the parish family, Archpriest Fr. Vazken Atmajian greeted the two Prelates and congratulated Archbishop Mardirossian on his recent re-election to a sixth term.

Thereafter, as the choir sang the hymn “Oorakh Ler,” Homenetmen scouts brought forth the flags of Armenia and Artsakh to begin the Prayers for the Republic and the blessing of the flags. Through Psalms and Gospel readings, prayers were offered beseeching the Lord to bless, protect, and strengthen our Republic and all who serve our nation, our leadership, soldiers, and citizens.

The Prelate then blessed the flags. The service concluded with the Armenian national anthem. His Eminence delivered his message, first thanking God for the blessing that is our nation. The Prelate expressed thanks for the well wishes on the occasion of his re-election and congratulated the new Religious and Executive Councils, stating that the work will continue in a harmonious manner and in the spirit of collaboration. He also greeted Archbishop Tabakian and Archbishop Sarkissian, and conveyed his blessings to the faithful.

Archbishop Sarkissian began his sermon by congratulating the Prelate on his re-election and conveying the greetings and well wishes of the Tehran Prelacy family. He reflected on the establishment of the first Republic of Armenia, including the battles fought to gain independence and the legacy of those victories which has been passed down through generations. Speaking of the most recent attacks in Artsakh, Archbishop Sarkissian stated that today’s realities require us to be vigilant and equipped at all times to protect and defend our lands and serve for the prosperity of our nation. He concluded by wishing well to the leaders and soldiers of our nation in their hallowed mission.

During requiem service, prayers were offered for the souls of all our heroes, old and new, who sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation.

As part of his visit to our Prelacy, on Friday, May 27, Archbishop Sarkissian met with former members of the Tehran community at the Mardirossian Youth Center in Burbank.
