Prelate Presides over Divine Liturgy at St. Garabed Church and Delivers Message to Sunday School Students

On Sunday, November 6, 2016, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon at St. Garabed Church in Hollywood. Among the faithful in attendance were Sunday School students, to whom the Prelate conveyed his encouraging message.

His Eminence greeted the parish family and faithful, and in particular the Sunday School students, with whom he had a warm interaction. The Prelate spoke to the students about the important mission of our Sunday Schools and encouraged them to take the religious and national instruction they receive seriously. His Eminence emphasized that the proper instruction of our youth in the tenets and principles of our faith and nation remains a priority, stating that just a couple of weeks before a seminar was held at the Prelacy to ensure that directors and teachers are fully equipped for this vital task.

The students recited Psalm 121, which begins, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth,” and the message of which is that God is the helper of all who seek Him.

Thereafter, the Prelate delivered his sermon, beginning with Psalm 121 and tying in the message of the Psalm with the day’s Gospel reading from Luke 8:49-57, the raising of Jairus’ daughter from the dead. Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, was a prominent and respected figure in society, but he was also a man of faith. When he realized that his daughter was at the point of death, he humbled himself at fell down at Jesus’ feet, begging Him to come to his house and heal his daughter. Jairus did not know what the answer to his plea would be, but he believed deep in his heart and soul that if anyone could help his daughter, it would be Jesus alone. And so, he put aside his pride and reputation and pleaded with Jesus to save his daughter.

The message that the Prelate conveyed to the students from the readings was that Jesus can and has made the impossible possible. Through the many miracles we have read about in the Bible, Jesus has authority over all, over the earth, the sea, and even over death. Second, that Jesus has love, care, and compassion for all of God’s children and He will provide for our needs if it is according to His will. Therefore, the Prelate urged the students and all the faithful to always lift their eyes to the Lord for our help comes from Him alone, and to follow in the example of Jairus by placing our full trust in our Lord and praying with faith, seeking not our will, but His.
