Prelate Thanks Swiss People for Humanitarian Assistance during the Armenian Genocide

His Holiness Aram I and accompanying delegation are currently in Switzerland on a special visit dedicated to the Armenian Genocide centennial. From September 20 – 28, 2015, His Holiness will be presiding over a number of ceremonies in various cities in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide and conveying his commendation and gratitude to the Swiss people for their vast and invaluable humanitarian assistance to Armenian refugees and orphans in particular.

Corresponding with the Pontiff’s visit, earlier this week the Prelate sent a letter of thanks to the Honorable Jean-François Lichtenstern, Consul General of Switzerland in Los Angeles, in which he wrote;

“On this centennial year of the Armenian Genocide, on behalf of the clergy, councils, and faithful of the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, we convey the utmost gratitude of the Armenian people for the humanitarian efforts of the Swiss government and people during and in the years following the Genocide. From the time of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 to the devastating earthquake in 1988, your nation has stood by our side, and for that we are forever indebted.

As you may know, our Pontiff, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, is currently in Switzerland to personally extend thanks and gratitude on behalf of the Armenian nation for the goodwill and benevolence of your government and people.

As we commemorate the 1.5 million martyrs of the Armenian Genocide, we remember and honor also the countries and peoples who lent a helping hand to the refugees and young orphans in particular. We take this opportunity also to thank the Swiss government not only for formally recognizing the Armenian Genocide, but furthermore for condemning its denial. We hope other nations will follow your example so that we may achieve universal recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
