“William Saroyan: The Man, The Writer” Screened at the Prelacy

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, on the evening of Thursday, April 9, 2015, the Western Prelacy hosted the screening of “William Saroyan: The Man, The Writer” at the Dikran and Zarouhie Der Ghazarian Hall. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, presided over the event, which was organized by the Prelacy Cultural-Educational Committee.

The event began with welcoming remarks by Executive Council Vice-Chair Dr. Dikran Babikian, who also introduced the film’s writer/director Mr. Paul Kalinian and his daughter, producer Dr. Susie Kalinian. The one-hour long film chronicled William Saroyan’s childhood memories, 60-year writing career, international fame, character, philosophy, and his eternal love for both the land of his ancestors and the land of his birth. It is narrated by William Saroyan himselff and actor Mike Connors (Krikor Ohanian), with Armenian subtitles.

The Prelate delivered the closing message. His Eminence commended the organizers, the Master of Ceremonies, and most especially the film’s creators, “who allowed us to have a better understanding of William Saroyan, the man, the writer, the philosopher, and the proud Armenian, through his own words and viewpoint.” The Prelate wished the Kalinians continued successes and presented them with mementos, including an illustrated poster of William Saroyan’s famous quote recently published by the Prelacy in commemoration of the Genocide centennial. Guests also received copies of the poster, and were hosted to a reception afterward. The film was also shown in three Prelacy high schools on April 8th and 9th.
