On Sunday morning, September 21, 2025, all churches of the Western Prelacy celebrated Armenia’s Independence Day with special prayers for the Republic of Armenia and the Blessing of the Tricolor Flag.
H.E. Archbishop Kegham Khacherian, Prelate of the Western Prelacy of the United States, celebrated Divine Liturgy at Holy Martyrs Armenian Apostolic Church in Encino. During the Divine Liturgy, the Prelate offered prayers to the Republic and blessed the Tricolor Flag, which was carried to the altar in procession by the deacons. In his sermon, H.E. Archbishop Khacherian emphasized that patriotism is vital to ensuring the homeland’s security and the nation’s prosperity. Among those present at the Divine Liturgy was Mr. Hovig Bedevian, member of the Executive Council of the Western Prelacy.
In his sermon, H.E. Archbishop Khacherian further emphasized that the right to a homeland belongs to peoples who live with patriotism. The Prelate explained that patriotism is not limited to the decisive battles fought or the sacrifices of martyrs, but is also about the daily commitment of Armenians to live authentically as Armenians, to preserve their values, and to safeguard the spiritual and national sacredness of their homeland, nation, and family. Patriotism, the Prelate added, also involves preserving and passing on the Armenian identity to future generations.
Addressing the faithful who filled the church, H.E. Archbishop Khacherian said, “You are all patriots, because, like your ancestors, you remain firmly rooted in the spiritual values of Armenia and the Armenian people. You safeguard their continuity by passing them on to your children, as patriotic soldiers of the Armenian Church, the Armenian language, culture, and traditions.” Inspired by the occasion of Independence Day, H.E. Archbishop Khacherian offered his heartfelt wishes and fatherly blessings to all in attendance.
